Lawn Aeration, Thatching and Overseeding in Mill Creek & Everett

Lawn Aeration, Thatching and Overseeding in Mill Creek & Everett

Mill Creek and Everett lawns deal with a combination of wet winters, dry summers and cool-season grasses. Over time that can mean compaction, thinning turf, moss and, in some lawns, a layer of thatch that needs to be physically removed.

I recommend separating two issues that often get lumped together. Aeration is regular maintenance. It relieves compaction by removing soil plugs and helps water, air and nutrients reach the root zone. Thatching is corrective work. It is more disruptive to the lawn and should be done when the buildup actually warrants it.

When I recommend thatching

For a healthy lawn, thatching is generally not something I recommend every year. With the grasses and climate we have here, every two to four years can be more appropriate. If a lawn has heavy moss or significant thatch, removing it can leave bare areas behind. In that situation I highly recommend following the thatching with aeration, overseeding and starter fertilizer.

If moss is heavy, applying a moss killer ahead of service can help the thatching work more effectively. Lily Miller Moss Out is one product I commonly recommend. Our thatching service uses single overlapping passes.

For lawns needing the complete process, The Works combines thatching, aeration, overseeding and starter fertilizer. For thin or patchy lawns that do not need thatching, Lawn Revival is usually the better fit.
